Free motion embroidery on linen
During my trip abroad to Provence, France, I was inspired by the unique beauty of the wildflowers in each place that I visited, so I stitched many of them into a dress I could wear everywhere, reminding me of those experiences. Each type of flower reminds me of a specific moment, captured in both the image of the flower and the secondary experience of stitching it.
Acid dyes and free motion quilting on silk and cotton
These quilts were inspired by a visit to SCAD's painting open studio along with the feelings evoked by different weather. After seeing so many beautiful works, I had an intense longing to create a painting that becomes usable and integrated with everyday life as a textile. My emotional state is greatly affected by the weather and seasons. The paint strokes capture the feeling of standing in the wind, in a drizzling rain, and in the sun on a spring day.
Various fabrics with free motion embroidery, dyed with natural turmeric and yellow onion skins
This window curtain was inspired by the golden sunlight of the evening shining through my ordinary window blinds. I wanted to capture that warm, speckled sunlight on a summer evening in a window treatment that lasts all day. Each of the different colors are different fabrics such as cotton, wool, or silk. These fibers each naturally take the dye differently, some darker than others. After sewing the entire piece, it was dyed all at once, allowing the different fabrics to naturally create the gradient effect.
Hand quilted cotton and wool fiber, 20" x 20"
This small reversible quilt was inspired by the traditional French quilting technique of Boutis, where elements in the quilt are raised by stuffing with cotton or wool fiber. I used a thin cotton for the front of the quilt, stuffing it with brightly colored wool (rather than the traditional white) to create soft colors. The floral imagery was inspired by the French poppy field I encountered during my trip abroad in Spring 2013. The binding fabric was also sourced from Paris.
15 Days in Provence: free motion quilting, hand embroidery, and natural dye on cotton and linen, 30" x 50"
Most of the different fabrics used to create this quilt were gathered from France during my trip abroad. During a part of my stay, I completed a small embroidery every day for fifteen days that somehow described that day. Although they seem random, each one holds a special memory and were placed on the quilt in order of their completion. Also, the back has four blue squares that were each hand dyed with natural woad dye during my stay. Woad is a natural dye similar to indigo found in Provence.
